Synopsis: While the world has, to a large extent, abandoned coal as an energy source, Turkey’s coal dependency has been on the rise. Turkey declared the year 2012 as “Coal Year” and has entered the year 2016 with more than 70 projects for the construction of power plants while 21 coal-fired power plants are already in working condition. “Dark Atlas” maps the struggles that are carried out against the existing and planned power plants that extend from Yırca to Sirnak. This documentary underlines the shared voices that are raised in different geographies through different means and the significant effort to make these voices, which illustrate that we say the very same thing in different languages while claiming our lives, heard.

Biography: Umut Vedat was born in Istanbul in 1982. He works as an independent photo journalist so as to combine his search for reality with his methods of expressions; he travels extensively in Turkey and across the world. Before embarking on his photo journalism career, Umut Vedat worked as an art director in an advertising agency; however, he abandoned this position with the intention of realizing his creative projects in line with his own methods of expression and observations.
